It’s all in the details…

It’s fun to make and paint furniture and all but I got really sick of it for a little while and wanted to try something totally different. So my wife and I took to decorating our house with some little details. As always we like to not spend any money… money is evil… haha, just kidding… we just don’t like to spend it if we don’t have to. Plus, honestly, there is so much stuff that can be used that is free and ready to be taken and remade into something cool. You just need a little bit of an imagination… and Pinterest… never forget the power of Pinterest.

So the first thing we did was make some frames. We had frames but they were Ikea frames, and since we’ve decided to boycott Ikea as much as possible we needed to cleanse our walls of their presence. We used to cringe every time we watched Friends and Phoebe would complain about Pottery Barn and forbid everybody to shop there, saying that everybody ends up with the same stuff. Well we’ve suddenly become Phoebe! It’s much more fun with unique stuff if you can find it. But waste-not-want-not-ers as we are we didn’t want to just get rid of the old frames. So we used the backs, the glass and the matting and I just made new frames out of pallet wood while my wife painted them. Nice teamwork I thought… So here’s what we got…

I also made some shelving for the bathroom which I thought turned out quite nice. We love the rustic look in our own home which I think most of you have figured out already…

The next thing we did was actually really fun. We have the best neighbor in the world! Not just because he’s friendly and helpful and a good guy but also because he works with throwing awesome stuff away… you wouldn’t believe the stuff that gets dumped… it’s seriously uncool. Anyway, he can get a hold of empty wine crates every now and then and those babies are really useful for all kinds of stuff. I’m sure I’ll be showing you lots more stuff that we will be using these wine crates for but for now I’ll show you what we did so far. We made some shadow boxes/shelves for our living room wall which turned out really cool. We just stained the outside and painted the inside some different colors and slapped them on our wall. Then we filled them with bits and bobs that we thought would look cool and voilá… done and dusted… and yes, this was inspired by Pinterest.

So yeah, it’s fun to do some other stuff sometimes as well… we’ll see what other projects I’ll come up with, I definitely have some ideas rattling around upstairs…
